Good Backlinks

So what makes a good backlink (to help your Google ranking) and what makes a bad one.

Lets start with the bad ones...

  • Bad Backlinks
    • A backlink on a site or page that isn't indexed on Google.
    • A backlink on a site or page that has no Google Page Rank.  Basically Google doesn't rate the page.
    • A backlink on a site or page that is spun text.  Basically the page has gibberish on it which is computer generated.
    • A backlink on a page which already has 13 or more outbound links.  The 'juice' is divided between all the outbound links equally. You don't really want to share the juice with any more than 12 other sites.
    • A backlink on a site or page that Google classes as a bad neighborhood.  If you get through all the above tests then it's probably OK.
    • A backlink where you have absolutely no control over the link text or where the link points at your site.  Not a disaster but not great either.
    • A backlink on a site or page which has absolutely no relevance to the industry of your website.  A link on a chocolate makers site to your site which is about refurbishing car parts is pretty useless. It's not so much that it's bad - more that that it will have a negligible effect.

So from the above it's pretty easy to reverse engineer a list of qualities that makes a good link.

  • Good backlinks
    • A backlink on a site or page that IS indexed on Google.
    • A backlink on a site or page that HAS Google Page Rank.  Google does rate the page.
    • A backlink on a site or page that is well written, grammaticality correct and  which is NOT computer generated drivel .
    • A backlink on a page which has 12 or LESS outbound links.  The 'juice' is divided between all the outbound links equally. The less outbound links you share the vital 'juice' with the better
    • A backlink on a site or page that Google classes as a GOOD neighborhood.  If you get through all the above tests then it's probably OK.
    • A backlink where you HAVE complete control over the link text AND where the link points at your site. Great for specifically targeting the exact phrases you want to rank for.
    • A backlink on a site or page which IS HIGHLY RELEVANT  to the industry of your website.  A link on a chocolate makers site to your site which is about a chocolate shop is great.

These are just a few of the basic rules if you want to learn more than consult a genuine link expert or SEO company.  ONLY listen to people who can prove they know what they are talking about.  SEO forums are often full of self proclaimed 'SEO experts'.  You need to speak to people who really know their stuff and have made their clients a fortune along the way.  Always take up references from any SEO adviser, like any industry there are quite a few sharks around.
